Gears of War

Gears of War is the third-person cover shooter that helped define the Xbox 360 era, putting players in the boots of Marcus Fenix as humanity fights for survival against the subterranean Locust Horde on the planet Sera. The intense, brutal campaign can be played cooperatively through the entire story, and the bond between Marcus and Dom Santiago is one of the most memorable in action gaming.

Developed by Epic Games, Gears of War introduced the cover-and-shoot mechanic and the Lancer assault rifle with its iconic chainsaw bayonet to mass audiences. The multiplayer suite popularised Versus modes including Warzone and Execution. The game's polished Unreal Engine 3 visuals set a benchmark for the generation. Gears of War launched a trilogy that became one of Microsoft's most important franchises and remains a landmark in cooperative action gaming.
